Pitti company in Florence every year invite a designer to produce a work for the 4 day event. I wanted to work within a historic courtyard and present a series of coloured glass sculptures which represented the spring / summer season - fashion seasons are a key way in which the fashion design world operates. The green glass represented the first spring shoots and vegetation growth , pink was the setting sun skies in Florence, the sky blue for the brilliant Florentine sky, and the pink glass represented the skies in Florence as the sound sets after the day. Making the installation transparent did not interfere with viewing the sculptures that already existed in the palazzo. Michaealangelo's David statue once stood in this precise place, and I felt it was important that this symbol of a man tied into this idea of menswear... The best explanation of this peaks evolution is that it was a more formal alternative to the notch, the lapel being widened at the top gave the appearance of a broader shoulder line which accentuated that desired athletic shape for a man. Firstly I worked on reducing the elongated peak which from a design point of view seemed fussy and over detailed. It was clear that the seam placement was a key feature on how the design was viewed and how it had evolved. Most seams ran diagonally downwards from the outside edge of the lapel to the inner side of the lapel which actually makes the shape created less flattering (in fact all menswear seemed to do this - which is contrary to the theory of why the style developed in the first place – to widen the shoulder). It seemed clear that to give the appearance of elongating the line of the collar and visually giving the shoulder line more width, the seam should actually run diagonally upwards to the outer part of the lapel and not downwards as most designers had done previously – so I reversed it. Together with the omission of a notch gap or extension of the peaks point, a new contemporary peak design was produced – a very minimal and reserved new peak style, more formal than a notch but without those dated period dandy connotations of the traditional peak.   https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/595f5579e3df289d41963c56/1502283468246-N6YZ091I2DWKNSA7SO4R/_MG_1461_V1.jpg Bespoke and tailoring - Angled collar This collar proposition looks at the most formal menswear collar – the shawl. When so many details on a jacket were angular, why had the collar on the shawl becomeso curved. When you look at the shawl collars continuous shape (the collar and lapel are in effect one piece as the eye views it) your eye wants to imagine a detail or ‘point’ where the lapel and collar should meet (usually represented by a notch). The continuous collar and curved lapel as it had been represented for decades started to look a little period. Some curving of the collar is necessary for the collar to fit correctly, however a modernisation of the design was overdue. I took the ‘point’ where the lapel and collar would normally meet (at eye level on the shoulder), and created an obvious angle, as opposed to how designers had normally treated this point, and just kept it rounded or continuous, or not put any detail there at all. The angle which is suggested has a connection to the other angles normally applied to tailoring. The subtle angle gives the Angled Evening a more contemporary feel. I began to look at how a paper pattern is created, and the layering involved in the process. It was clear that a seam detail was evident between the collar and lapel. In the new work, the lapel and collar were separated in the prototype and the collar was overlaid onto the edge of the lapel to create a new form of notch. The notch by nature reduced in size and the over laying of the collar on top of the lapel created a familiar look but with an added depth. The angle and proportion of the collar had not changed, but the position of the lapel had, which incidentally also moved the angle and created a smaller more contemporary notch. The break through seemed a simple one, as the collar looked correct straight away, in fact the shape looked so familiar that several ‘seasoned Savile row observers’ did not notice the over lay or notch reduction at all. When the collar was laid flat and photographed, it became evident that the shape resembled the mitered blade of a tie, which was ironic as many of my tailoring designs have been produced as propositions to be worn without a tie… As a final detail, to counter balance the collar and lapel and to ‘contain’ the new design, I added a neat hand sewn stitch detail to the front of the lapel, which previously was a feature hidden underneath to secure a flower in place, A simple modern stitch drew attention to the new overlay notch. We installed a sculpture made of fibre optic thread which also lit the collection.
